During an interview with one of the young girls, Nereida, Roy learned something special about Norma, who has lived at the Orphanage for many years. Roy: Nereida, when you first came to our Orphanage, what did you know about God and our Lord Jesus Christ?
Nereida: Nothing.
Roy: Now that you have lived here for awhile, what do you now know about our Lord?
Nereida: "I know that He loves me, and when we pray He answers our prayers. He provides for our needs and cares about us. Norma told me.
Roy: Did you say that it was Norma who has taught you about Jesus?
Nereida: Yes, Norma told me.
After the interview, I stepped outside the room and found Norma’s older brother, Ramiro, close by so I asked him, “Hijo, are you aware that your sister is teaching the girls about Jesus inside the girls' dorm?” Ramiro said, “No, I did not know.” Then Norma, 14 years old at the time, came walking by. I called to her, “Mija, please come here.” When she got close, I stretched out my arms and we hugged. As we did, I told her, "I am very proud of you.” She said, “Why Roy?” I replied, “Nereida has told me about your teaching the girls stories from the Bible, about our Lord. What a special ministry you have. That’s why I am so proud of you.”
At the time, only the nannies that care for the girls knew of Norma’s ministry. She was and continues teaching girls both younger and older than she is. Norma has invited me, on two occasions, to come and be a part of the Bible Story hour. On one of the nights that I sat in, she taught the girls three of Jesus' parables; the other time she recited Joseph’s story from memory. After telling a story, she asked the girls questions to make certain that they understood the night’s lesson. Several girls would raise their hands eagerly wanting to respond to Norma’s questions. I was amazed by the depth of Norma’s Biblical understanding and her teaching technique. I felt her love for these girls and her love of God. In return, I witnessed how much the girls love and respect her. God has called Norma to be His special disciple ministering inside the walls of our Orphanage and she has been obedient to His call. What makes this even more special is that Norma was just like Nereida and knew nothing of our Lord before she came to live at our Home for Needy Children. -Roy Ketring |
