There are three Port of Entries into Mexico in the Tijuana – Tecate area, San Ysidro that leads to downtown Tijuana, Otay Mesa that is located near the Tijuana International Airport, and Tecate. The following directions pertain to the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Crossing the Border Take Interstate I-5 or I-805 to the intersection of I-5 at San Ysidro and proceed south to one of the Mexico Port of Entry Lanes that are overseen by Mexican Custom Agents. If you get a red light and the bell sounds, you must enter one of diagonal parking spots in the Custom’s Inspection area. The Mexican Custom Agents also randomly direct vehicles into Custom’s Inspection area. There is nothing to fear at Custom’s Inspection unless you have numerous items that you are trying to get across the border without authorization. If you have items that the Mexican Custom authorities question, then your choices are to try to convince the Mexican authorities to allow you entry or in some cases you can pay a duty on the items that you are importing into Mexico. If you have a car full of items you should go into the Declaration Lane and pay a 16 % duty. Only new items are allowed to enter and you will need receipts. Driving Through Tijuana
After you leave the Inspection you’re your will see signs directing you to Ensenada – Rosarito. Take this exit which is a right hand ramp that will take you directly to and merge you with the road that parallels the metal fence that separates the USA and Mexico. After merging with the road that parallels the Border Fence continue straight along the fence and up a very steep hill. At the top of the hill the road will make a sharp turn to the left and then will drop down on a heavy descending grade toward an overpass that spans the road that you are on near the bottom of the down grade. Before reaching the overpass, exit the road that you are on at the bottom of the down grade by taking the off ramp merging to the right into a divided roadway. As you exit the down grade, be prepared to merge with heavy on-coming traffic. After merging with the heavily traveled divided roadway, and when you have an opportunity, merge into the left lane and follow it around a curve to the left as it turns away from traffic that is going to the Playas (beach). Taking The Toll Road
As you continue around the curve, the road will straighten out, and in a little over a mile miles you will come to the first toll booth. Congratulations, the worst is now behind you! The remaining part of the trip is “a piece of cake.” Enjoy the view along the ocean. The next toll booth will be at the south end of Rosarito. NOTE: a large section of the Toll Road, near Salsipuedes, has sunk into the ocean. You will be directed to exit the Toll Road at La Mision and onto the “Old Road Mexican Highway No. 1” which runs easterly of and pretty much parallel with the Toll Road. It will take you into the ranch areas. You will climb out of the La Mision Canyon and will go a little over 22 miles joining back with the Toll Road just south of the Third Toll Booth at the north end of the little fishing community called El Sauzal. East to San Antonio de Las Minas
After joining back with the Toll Road be prepared to exit in approximately 1.6 miles at the first overpass that you will come to. Go under the overpass and turn right on the access ramp that will take you up and over the toll road. This new highway is Mexican Highway No. 3 which runs northeasterly to Tecate. DO NOT GO STRAIGHT AHEAD after crossing the overpass, as you will be pointed directly into oncoming traffic. You must continue circling to the right at which time you will turn back left merging into the Toll Road's westward exit ramp to Tecate. Arriving at the Orphanage
Turn right at the traffic signal and onto a paved road that begins at the last little store. This is the first traffic signal that you will come to after leaving the ocean. There is a barbed wire fence and an open field on the left side of the roadway. Continue straight down the paved road, making certain that you stop for the stop signs. The local police department is waiting (hoping) for someone to run one of the stop signs. You will continue up over a concrete bridge that spans a little creek. Continue past the next intersection that has a right turn only. You will see a concrete/block wall fence begin that will continue toward the Orphanage gate. The Orphanage will be on your right. You cannot miss it as you will see our Orphanage Sign at the entrance gate, the basketball court, and some larger buildings. You will also see the Orphanage Logo is painted on the Clinic building. Bienvenidos, you have arrived! |
