Travel Information
Passport
A passport is recommended.
Passport Information

For travel by car from Mexico to the US, please check Homeland Security’s Web Site, for any changes to the January 2008 requirements which were:
Beginning January 31, 2008, U.S. Citizens traveling by land or sea will need to present the following to enter or depart the United States:

  • Ages 19 and older: a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate
  • Children ages 18 and younger: proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

Although passports aren't required yet, it is recommended that you begin the passport process as we understand that they will eventually be required for land entry back into the US.

Mexican Car Insurance

Having car insurance issued by a Mexican insurance company is mandatory to drive in Mexico. Prior to crossing the border there are numerous places you can stop to get Mexican car insurance. Here are three Mexican insurance companies where you can explore cost and coverages.

  • INSTANT Mexico Auto Insurance
  • Border Mexican Insurance Services
  • Baja-Mex Insurance Services
Van/Bus Rental

ASAP Rentals in San Diego rents vans. We understand that they will deliver the vans to wherever you request in the San Diego County including the airport. We also understand that you can purchase Mexican car insurance through them for the vans you rent.
