Sofia Alejandra Moreno Garayzar came to our Orphanage on January 2, 1997 when she was eight-years old with her two younger brothers Agustin and Jesus. The children's mother is a drug addict and has no contact with her kids. Jesus was only fifteen-months old when he arrived. He cried all of the time and would curl into the fetal position when anyone approached him. Though we worried that drugs had permanently damaged him, today he is a normal energetic, loving boy.
Agustin was born with his leg bone disconnected from the hip socket. He was previously operated on by the LA Shriners Hospital, however the operation was not successful. The Shriners have agreed to operate on him again.
Sofia craved affection when she arrived at our Home for Needy Children. She would drape herself over visitors. She desperately needed love, something that was missing for the first eight years of her life. Today Sofia is a special young woman with an infectious smile who loves her Lord. She sings with the church's choral group and is very happy being part of the Orphanage's family.
The Orphanage honored her on May 8th, her fifteenth birthday, with a Quincianera at the church and with a special meal and live music afterwards at the Orphanage. A Quincianera is a celebration for girls turning fifteen, to honor their entering womanhood. Sofia's Quincianera was a worship service where she rededicated herself to her Lord. -Roy Ketring
