What if I don’t speak any Spanish?
That is not a problem on playing with the kids. They understand your love and attention.
What can I do with the kids?
The Orphanage’s desire is that you show the children lots and lots of LOVE!
• There are certain guidelines that the Mexican government has about appropriate play to protect the children. The Orphanage will let you know them.
• Play all kinds of games with the children – basketball, soccer, jump rope - you name it!
• Plan organized lessons, skits, et cetera, including: VBS, dramas, puppets, showing videos, crafts and other special activities.
• Make a special meal – for example, the children love hamburgers, hot dogs and carne asada.
• Do not take the children off the Orphanage property, even if you are just going around the corner for a snack. If you bring back something for one of the kids, please think how the other kids may feel.
How can I help at the Orphanage?
• Bring fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat products. These items are expensive, so they frequently are not in the diet at the Orphanage. On a limited budget, there is a lot of rice, beans and tortillas.
• Have a little extra money? You could help buy medicine for the children. The Orphanage has an account at the local pharmacy, Name of Pharmacy. They are frequently at their limit of $800.
• Refresh and encourage the Orphanage staff. Most of the nannies work at the Orphanage 24 hours a day, with one day off per week. Phew! Ways that you could help include working in the kitchen, helping in the nursery, doing laundry, cleaning the bathrooms, and sweeping.
• Work with the local church on a project. Iglesia Del Banquete is happy to work with you on outreach projects for the community.
• Check out our most recent Work Projects List.
What are some of the guidelines of the Orphanage?
• Mexican social services (DIF) has some specific rules on how to play with the children. The Orphanage will share these rules with you.
• Plumbing in Mexico is not like in the United States. Please do not put toilet paper in the toilets. It will cause the toilet to overflow. Place the paper in a garbage near the toilet.
• Water is precious so conserve agua, por favor. This may mean limiting your showers.
• Please be considerate of our house. When the children are sleeping, do not be too noisy. Please clean up after yourself.
What does the Orphanage staff expect from me?
Over the years that the Orphanage has been around, many visitors have come. The Staff is very patient with groups, but please consider:
• Come with a willingness to learn about new cultures.
• Respect the Orphanage’s rules.
• Show respect for the Mexican culture. The staff may do things that you don’t understand, but you are a guest in their house. Please be considerate.
