Friends of the Orphanage

The Foundation is a charity formed in the United States to support the orphanage. The foundation’s goals are to aid the orphanage financially, help maintain the facilities, assist with capital improvements and act as an advisor to the orphanage for future improvements. The orphanage’s primary benefactors are non-Mexican nationals. The foundation assists the orphanage with its newsletters and web site, receives donations, and communicates on behalf of the orphanage with its inquiries, donors and friends throughout the world.

The El Sauzal Orphanage is a Mexican corporation; they are not able to give tax-deductions. The foundation is a 501C-3 non profit corporation. Donations given to the Foundation are tax deductible. (See How to Give.)

The Foundation’s Mission
Our mission is to:
•Inform and connect friends and supporters of El Sauzal, building deeper relationships between the friends and the Orphanage.
•Raise financial support for the Orphanage to eliminate debt and build resources for further needs.
•Support, empower and refresh the Orphanage staff as they love the children.
•Continue to build a safe, healthy and functional environment for the children to grow in.
•Further equip the Orphanage as they raise children to be whole, healthy adults with a purpose and a hope.

What do we do with the money you send?
Expense pie
2010 contributions
Our job is to get your money to the Orphanage.  We strive to minimize our overhead.  All of the Foundation’s work - financial management and communication (i.e. the newsletter, website, etc.) - is done by volunteers.  In 2010, 95.1% of donations went to Orphanage support; 4.9% was used for overhead (bank charges, phone charges, postage, et cetera).

What about financial accountability?
Being good stewards with your gifts is so important to us that we wrote it into our bylaws.  We follow the guidelines of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, the ECFA.  We are currently too small to be a member of the ECFA, but plan to apply when we qualify.  You can know that getting your gifts to the Orphanage is vital to us.

The Foundation’s Story
Orphanage director Josue Espinoza requested for several years that friends of the Orphanage consider forming a Foundation; he desired help raising support from the United States.  In 2003, Roy Ketring began talking with potential board members.  Work began in earnest in mid 2004; by the end of 2004, the Foundation was approved and registered both with the state of California and the I.R.S.

Who is in the Foundation?
Kim McManus
Foundation board member Kim Strobel is also a school teacher.
The Foundation is made up of a board of directors and an advisory board, who serve as volunteers, at their own expense. Each member has been intimately involved with the Orphanage for several years, many for more than fifteen years.  The members know well the work of the Orphanage and are passionate about helping children and missions.

Foundation President Roy Ketring has been working with the Orphanage since 1979.  He is closely connected to the Espinoza family.  Based out of Southern California, Roy has been the United States liaison/contact for Orphanage visitors for many years.
